What is the Greater Guyana Initiative?
The Greater Guyana Initiative, led by the Stabroek Block co-venturers ExxonMobil Guyana, Hess Guyana Exploration Ltd. and CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Limited, will support GYD $20 billion of capacity development programs across Guyana over the next 10 years. This represents a significant expansion of ongoing capacity building efforts in the country and demonstrates a long-term commitment by the Stabroek Block co-venturers to help further development in Guyana.
With a focus on education and training, economic development and health, the initiative aims to strengthen the Guyanese workforce, increase the competitiveness of local businesses across sectors and lay the foundation necessary for a thriving business environment and sustained economic growth.
As programs are developed, national and local leaders, community members and the private sector will be engaged to bolster the effectiveness of the endeavor and ensure alignment with Guyana’s development priorities as they evolve over the coming years.
Program Activities
The Greater Guyana Initiative (GGI) multi-faceted approach focuses on education and training, economic development and health.
Education and Training
The GGI education and training programs will focus on advancing diverse vocational and university education programs, build skills, and develop competencies to support growing opportunities across many economic sectors.
In collaboration with the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), capacity-building initiatives will focus on building a technical workforce for the broader economy. Funding will advance programs for select craft skills (e.g., mechanical, electrical and welding) and basic industrial safety training.
The initiative will also seek opportunities to expand existing support and advance higher education programs at the University of Guyana for long-term capacity building and development.
Health
The GGI will also focus on public health initiatives that increase access to treatment and education.
Economic Development and Diversification
The GGI will expand the co-venturers’ current support for the Centre for Local Business Development and facilitate its transition into a long-term center of excellence for broader industry.
In addition to expansion of the Centre, e programs will focus on regional initiatives in capacity development in priority areas such as business development and agriculture.
